The story of Grains of Gold
Osmanthus's old Chinese name means 'grains of gold.' To pluck its branch, in the classical phrase, was to pass the imperial examination — two thousand years later it still means making it.
Each rice-grain blossom is pinched by hand, dozens of them clustered into one golden head and set under glass. The sweetest week of autumn ends; this corner of it does not.
