Kyanite is the stone with two hardnesses: scratch it along the blade and it gives at about a 5, scratch it across and it holds near a 7. Mineralogists once called it disthene — two strengths — for exactly that reason. Her flower is the cornflower, the same blue growing at the edge of a wheat field. Traditionally worn for speaking clearly: know where you give, and know where you hold.
