Keeper's Notes
The story of A Branch of Spring
Fifteen centuries ago, a poet in the south had nothing to send a faraway friend, so he mailed a flowering branch with one line: here is a branch of spring. The flower died on the road; the line never has.
We pinched that branch into a magnolia — a porcelain stem, two blooms. Set a stick of incense between them and light it; the smoke climbs slowly through the petals, and for a while the room is expensively quiet.

Moments it was made for
- At the tea tableLight a stick before the water boils. As the smoke steadies, so do the guests.
- A cue for stillnessIncense before meditation — a signal to the body: you may be quiet now.
- The literary giftFor the friend who loves tea and paper. More useful than an ornament, more flowering than an incense set.
